The New New World Order

Foreign Affairs - The New New World Order - Daniel W. Drezner:
From Foreign Affairs, March/April 2007

Summary: Controversies over the war in Iraq and U.S. unilateralism have overshadowed a more pragmatic and multilateral component of the Bush administration's grand strategy: its attempt to reconfigure U.S. foreign policy and international institutions in order to account for shifts in the global distribution of power and the emergence of states such as China and India. This unheralded move is well intentioned and well advised, and Washington should redouble its efforts.

Daniel W. Drezner is Associate Professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and the author of 'All Politics Is Global.'

RISING AND FALLING

Throughout the twentieth century, the list of the world's great powers was predictably short: the United States, the Soviet Union, Japan, and northwestern Europe. The twenty-first century will be different. China and India are emerging as economic and political heavyweights: China holds over a trillion dollars in hard currency reserves, India's high-tech sector is growing by leaps and bounds, and both countries, already recognized nuclear powers, are developing blue-water navies. Darfur and the Genocide Debate

Foreign Affairs - Darfur and the Genocide Debate - Scott Straus:
From Foreign Affairs, January/February 2005

Article preview: first 500 of 3,483 words total.

Summary: As western Sudan continues to suffer, much international attention has focused on whether to call what is happening there 'genocide.' Yet once the term was invoked, it did not trigger outside intervention. Terminology turns out to matter far less than was expected. And once more, the world has dithered while people die.

Scott Straus is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison."

Has Globalization Passed Its Peak? -

Foreign Affairs - Has Globalization Passed Its Peak? - Rawi Abdelal and Adam Segal:
From Foreign Affairs, January/February 2007

Summary: Not long ago, the expansion of free trade worldwide seemed inevitable. Over the last few years, however, economic barriers have started to rise once more. The forecast for the future looks mixed: some integration will probably continue even as a new economic nationalism takes hold. Managing this new, muddled world will take deft handling, in Washington, Brussels, and Beijing.

Rawi Abdelal is an Associate Professor at Harvard Business School and the author of the forthcoming Capital Rules: The Construction of Global finance. Adam Segal is Maurice R. Greenberg Senior Fellow for China Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of Digital Dragon: High Technology Enterprises in China.

2007/02/09 >> BE Etats-Unis 65 >>

http://www.bulletins-electroniques.com/actualites/41222.htm
